THE Border hockey team fought back courageously in both their matches yesterday to win both and force their way into the last four of the A section of the U18 interprovincial played at East London.
Two of the other top teams, Western Province and Southern Gauteng, played to a 3-3 draw and as a result, both remain unbeaten in Pool A this far.
Against KwaZulu-Natal Inland in an early morning match, Border found themselves on the back foot and a goal behind with time running out. Andrew Buckley had found the back of the net twice and Lee Prinsloo had contributed a goal.
A calm demeanour certainly helped and Jason Maclachlan was able to score to give the hosts a 4-3 win.

In the Men's A Section, University of Pretoria (Tuks) beat hosts Free State Varsity (Kovsies) 4-0. The Tuks scorers were Jonty Robinson, Brendan van Zyl, Simon O'Callaghan and Malcolm Ratz.
The University of Johannesburg clash with Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) saw UJ eventually prevailing 2-1.
UJ's Tebogo Lerole and Joezay Kops equalised. The winner came after the final hooter, a UJ penalty corner seeing Brandon Panther net a deflection goal.

The Border A hockey team were fortunate to come away from their opening match of the 2009 U18 tournament with a 5-5 draw against a tenacious Eastern Gauteng side at Kat Leisure Park in East London yesterday.
The exciting game was played at a furious pace with action moving from one side to the other throughout.
Border were 4-5 down when the hooter went for the end of the game, having secured a short corner only seconds before, and with Gauteng East failing to clear their line, some clever stickwork from Daniel Schroeder beat the East Gauteng goalkeeper to force the draw amid much relief from the players and spectators.
